Chapter 4
Through the Blockade
The British Navy has ordered its strongest ships to form a blockade, preventing American fleets from operating freely. Across the Gulf, Cartalena claims its independence from Spain and opens its port to privateers. To recruit the best sailors and build new contacts, you’ll need to force your way through the waiting British warships. With the letters of your ship’s new name not yet dry, you take a deep breath and set your course for Cartalena.

In Cartalena...
You discuss next steps with your new captains at a local tavern. You catch sight of Jean Lafayette arguing in the corner with a stern-looking British vole. A few moments later, she strides briskly out of the tavern and Jean slinks over to your table. “The British plan to attack New L’Oreans soon,” he whispers, without his usual bravado. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried.”
Read both options, then choose one:
Cheer Jean up by introducing him to your crew and celebrating how much contraband you’ve been moving through Ratuga Bay
Show Jean around your new ship and discuss plans in private for improving defenses at your stronghold in Ratuga Bay.
Celebrate Success
The tavern erupts with laughter and song as Jean concludes a dazzling story. He turns to you and says, “Thank you for a proper pirate’s welcome. I can see you are enjoying your success.” He glances around, and you notice for the first time more than a few suspicious characters watching you. “Newfound success can bring new enemies,” he says with a steely smile. “And you appear to have made more than enough already.” Jean nods politely to the assorted ruffians as he makes his way to the door.

Plan Defenses
“Hmm. It’s a fine ship, reasonably fast with a full crew, but how do you think you’ll fare against the might of the British navy? If you plan to sail behind Pierre and I when the war comes, you’ll need to keep up. You’ve stationed too many sailors at your stronghold, as well. Certainly it doesn’t do any good to hold the ground if you can’t control the seas. I expected more from you, considering how strongly everyone sings your praises!” Jean’s words of advice and caution ring in your ears long after he leaves.
