Chapter 6
British Espionage
Through one of your recent contacts, you arrange a meeting in New L’Oreans with Rebecca Alston, the British agent you saw with Jean in Cartalena. She promises a handsome payment for a daring mission: acquiring Commodore Gnaw’s battle plans and extensive maps of the area. She provides the location of a secret hideout where you can meet after the raid, offering it to you permanently if you hold up your end of the deal.

The Agent
At the secret hideout on the outskirts of New L’Oreans one of your sailors gets your attention. “The British agent, she’s arrived,” he says. “You might want to have a look at this first, though. Just came in.” He hands you a letter stamped with the seal of Marcus Gladwell, your wealthy American backer. Glancing over the message, you infer that Pierre Lafayette has been aggressively recruiting mercenaries to take on an unknown threat. Whether this refers to the British or someone else is not entirely clear.
“Welcome to your new accommodations,” Rebecca Alston announces as she enters. “Britain has no problem with pirates, as long as they don’t interfere too much with our operations. Can we trust you to work alongside us, rather than against us?”
You hand over the stolen documents and maps as you consider your options.
Read both options, then choose one:
Assure Rebecca that you look forward to a strong alliance with the British.
Make it clear to her that Ratuga Bay is not to be trifled with and that your fleet is fully prepared to defend itself when Britain attacks.
Extend Trust
Rebecca smiles. “I’m so glad to hear that. We’ll be in touch when we have more work for you.”
As she leaves, you consider your decision. Pirate crews are notoriously talkative. Once word gets out that you’ve been working for the British, your contacts will dry up and it’ll be harder to manage your already limited resources.

Show Confidence
“We are very aware of your affairs in Ratuga Bay. It is an impressive operation,” Rebecca nods in apparent agreement. “I hope you’ve enjoyed the spoils you’ve amassed so far. I think you’ll find that in war many of the opportunities you used to enjoy will vanish.” As she leaves, you look over your new hideout and wonder if your growing empire will be enough to secure your place in Ratuga Bay.
