Prologue

1813

America is at war with Britain. The unstable political and economic climate encourages rampant piracy throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Spies and saboteurs on both sides of the war use the pirates to gain information and smuggle important assets. Ratuga Bay, a pirate empire, flourishes just outside of New L’Oreans. Teeming with roguish rodents, reptilian mercenaries, and scoundrels of all kinds, Ratuga’s treacherous bay provides the perfect location to harbor captured ships while its hidden tributaries are ideal for smuggling contraband into the city.

As up-and-coming smugglers in the New L’Oreans underground, you’re always on the lookout for opportunities to expand your business. Tonight you head to Coquet’s, a seedy dance hall in one of the city’s roughest neighborhoods.

Amid the thumping two-steps at Coquet’s you strike up a conversation with the renowned Lafayette brothers, sly Jean and ruthless Pierre. These twin rats hold great power in Ratuga Bay. Your boldness pays off with a job: Jean unravels a worn map and points out the location of an old, mostly destroyed stronghold on a small island in Ratuga…
